To Know & Be Known

*I wrote this in my journal January 15th, 2023...with some tweaks from the present

The LORD also will be a refuge for the oppressed, a refuge in times of trouble. And they that know thy name will put their trust in thee: for thou, LORD, hast not forsaken them that seek thee. -Psalms 9:9-10 (KJV)

You have to know who God is before you trust Him.

Once you know who He is, then you can put your trust in Him; but before you do that... how can you trust somebody who you've never met? How can you believe in Someone whom you don't know?

I looked at the definition of this verb "know" from the website godrules.net which uses KJV Strong's Concordance (basically an index of every word used in that version of the Bible). I use this website often when I'm reading my Bible to help clarify terms that I am unsure of. It's also a great study tool. Anyways, these definitions are what popped up under the verb "know" used within that particular verse (Psalm 9:10):

  • to perceive & see, find out, and discern

  • to discriminate, to distinguish

  • to know by experience

  • to recognize, admit, confess

  • to consider

  • to be acquainted with

  • to be skillful in

  • to be wise

  • to make oneself known

  • to be perceived, instructed

  • to cause to know

  • to reveal oneself

  • to be known

While mulling over these definitions, I went over them one by one and thought about how they tied into what it means to know God.

  • To know God is to perceive Him

  • To know God is to discern Him

  • To know God is to distinguish Him

  • To know God is to experience Him

  • To know God is to recognize Him

  • To know God is to admit His existence

  • To know God is to confess that He is

  • To know God is to consider Him

  • To know God is to be acquainted with Him

  • To know God is to be skillful in Him

  • To know God is to be wise in Him

  • To know God is to make oneself known to Him

  • To know God is to be perceived by Him

  • To know God is to be instructed in Him

  • To know God is to be familiar with Him

  • To know God is to reveal yourself to Him

  • To know God is to be made known of Him

[while thinking about these things and considering all of these definitions, a hymn popped into my mind which is titled below, it's a beautiful hymn, and the words are just too good, plus it ties in perfectly with this subject]

The life of the believer is a walk with God, a two-way relationship; one in which the Believer knows God and is known of Him. It represents this beautiful, intimate fellowship. This secretive encounter or exchange of shared actions between the two. It's a deep representation of marriage. It's a lifelong friendship of knowing Jesus and talking to Him about the smallest of details going on in & around your life. It is a privilege and opportunity that any one can have access to. It is knowing God & being known by God, the Author of the Universe, and the Maker of the stars. It reminds me of the song, "Fully Known," by Tauren Wells. I'm fully known and loved by my Father in spite of my failures & shortcomings. He sees right through the mess inside me & loves me anyway. I am fully, wholly, & completely known by God. I am loved, seen, & heard by Him. He loves me more than anyone else, anything ever could, and that to me is a miracle. We often think that this type of love is unreal or too good to be true or that there are strings attached with it, but I promise you, there's not. There is a God in Heaven who created the world, ordained the stars, and wants to have a personal, meaningful relationship with You. You are wanted & precious in His eyes so much so that He would give His only Son to die for you. That is a type of love we don't deserve and are so unworthy of, but that's also the type of love which makes the relationship between the Believer and Christ the Savior oh so sweet.

God would become a son of man, so that we would become sons of God: holy, presentable, & blameless before Him. It is a timeless story but one that still reigns true...In a love which cannot cease, I am His and He is mine.

Do you know Him?

Please, please, please reach out to me if you don't.

Much love,

Hailey Renee
